The German Panzer V Panther Ausf. D was the first production model of the Panther series, introduced in early 1943 as Germany’s response to the Soviet T-34. Designed to combine high mobility, strong armour, and a powerful gun, the Ausf. D featured the excellent 7.5cm KwK 42 L/70, one of the most effective anti-tank guns of the war, capable of destroying most Allied armour at long range. Its armour layout included a sloped 80mm glacis plate, providing exceptional protection for its weight, while the Maybach HL 210 engine and wide interleaved road wheels offered good mobility—at least in theory. Early Panthers, however, suffered from significant mechanical issues, including engine fires, transmission failures, and weak final drives.

The Ausf. D saw its combat debut at the Battle of Kursk (July 1943), where many vehicles broke down before or during the fighting, but those that performed as intended demonstrated impressive firepower and survivability. After initial teething problems, incremental improvements were made in the field, and the Panther quickly evolved into one of Germany’s premier medium tanks. The Ausf. D established the core design of the Panther family and laid the groundwork for the more reliable Ausf. A and G models that followed.
