The German Panzer IV Ausf. G marked a major turning point in the Panzer IV’s evolution, transforming it from an infantry-support tank into a true frontline battle tank. Introduced in 1942, the Ausf. G was the first widely produced variant to mount the long-barrelled 7.5cm KwK 40 L/43 (later L/48) anti-tank gun, dramatically increasing its ability to penetrate Soviet T-34s and KV-1s at combat ranges. Armour protection was also strengthened, with the glacis plate increased to 80mm on later production vehicles, and many tanks fitted with Schürzen side skirts for additional defence against anti-tank rifles and shaped charges. Despite the added weight, the reliable Maybach HL 120 TRM engine maintained good mobility, keeping the tank competitive on all fronts.
The Ausf. G served extensively on the Eastern Front, in North Africa, and in Italy, proving itself one of Germany’s most effective and balanced medium tanks of the mid-war period. Its powerful gun, improved armour, and dependable mechanics made it a formidable opponent for Allied armour, helping solidify the Panzer IV’s role as the backbone of German Panzer divisions. The Ausf. G’s design successes paved the way for the later Ausf. H and J models, ensuring the Panzer IV remained a key battlefield asset until the end of the war.
