The German Panzer IV Ausf. D was an early-war development of the Panzer IV series, produced in 1939–1941 and designed primarily as an infantry-support tank. It retained the short-barrelled 7.5cm KwK 37 L/24 gun, optimized for firing high-explosive rounds to suppress enemy positions, bunkers, and anti-tank guns. Armour protection was modest, with 30mm on the hull front and turret, though additional plates were sometimes added in the field. The Ausf. D featured improvements over earlier models, including a redesigned commander’s cupola, revised turret layout, and better hull ventilation. Powered by the dependable Maybach HL 120 TRM engine, it achieved speeds of around 40 km/h, giving it solid mobility for early Blitzkrieg campaigns.

The Panzer IV Ausf. D saw combat in the invasion of France, the Balkans, and the opening phases of Operation Barbarossa, often working alongside Panzer III units to provide the heavy fire support needed to break enemy defensive lines. Although its short 75mm gun rapidly became inadequate against improving Allied armour, the Ausf. D played a vital role in Germany’s early-war successes. It laid the foundation for later Panzer IV variants that would evolve into one of Germany’s most important and widely used tanks of the war.
