The German Flakpanzer III (3.7cm FlaK 43) was an experimental self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle developed in 1944 using the proven Panzer III chassis as a platform for the powerful 3.7cm FlaK 43 autocannon. The design featured an open-topped, lightly armoured turret with folding side panels to give the gun a wide firing arc and improved visibility against fast-moving aircraft. The FlaK 43 offered a high rate of fire and far greater punch than the earlier 20mm guns, making it effective not only against low- to medium-altitude aircraft but also in a ground-support role against infantry and soft-skinned vehicles. Armour thickness was modest—around 15–30mm—sufficient against small-arms fire while keeping the vehicle light enough for good mobility.
Only a handful of prototypes were completed, as the Panzer III chassis was largely phased out of frontline service by 1944, and production resources were shifted to more advanced Flakpanzer designs like the Wirbelwind and Ostwind. Despite its limited numbers, the Flakpanzer III (3.7cm FlaK 43) represented an important step in Germany’s late-war effort to field more heavily armed and mobile air-defence vehicles capable of protecting armoured formations from Allied air superiority.
