The British A43 Black Prince Infantry Tank was a late-war development intended as the ultimate evolution of the Churchill tank series, designed to carry heavier armament while maintaining strong armor protection for infantry support roles. Introduced in 1945, the Black Prince featured significantly widened Churchill chassis and tracks to accommodate the powerful 17-pounder (76.2mm) anti-tank gun, giving it the firepower to engage the latest German tanks such as the Panther and Tiger I. Its armor was substantially increased, with frontal thickness up to 152mm, making it one of the most heavily protected British tanks of the war. Despite these upgrades, the use of the Churchill’s original Bedford engine left the tank underpowered, with a top speed of only 17 km/h (10.5 mph), limiting its tactical flexibility. Six prototypes were built, but the war ended before it could enter production, and the emergence of the more versatile Centurion rendered it obsolete. While it never saw combat, the Black Prince represented the peak of British infantry tank design and marked the end of the infantry tank concept in favor of more mobile and multi-role main battle tanks.
