The Australian 25-pounder Short Barrel, commonly known as the “Baby 25-pounder,” was a modified version of the standard British QF 25-pounder field gun, adapted for use in the harsh terrain of the Southwest Pacific. Developed in 1942–43, it featured a shortened barrel and lighter carriage, allowing it to be broken down into components for transport by jeep, pack animals, or even airlift, making it ideal for jungle warfare where standard artillery was too heavy and cumbersome.
Despite its reduced size, the Short 25-pounder retained the ability to fire the standard 87.6mm (25-pound) shell, providing valuable fire support against infantry, bunkers, and fortified positions. Although its range and muzzle velocity were lower than the full-sized version, its portability made it highly effective in environments such as New Guinea and other island campaigns. Operated by Australian artillery units, it proved to be a practical and innovative solution to the logistical challenges of jungle warfare, combining mobility with reliable firepower.
