The Australian 6-pounder Anti-Tank Gun was a key Allied weapon used by Australian forces from 1942 onward, providing a major improvement in anti-armour capability over earlier 2-pounder guns. Officially the QF 6-pounder (57mm), it could fire armour-piercing rounds capable of defeating most German and Italian tanks at typical combat ranges, while also using high-explosive ammunition for infantry support. The gun was relatively lightweight for its class and could be towed by trucks or moved into position by its crew, making it adaptable to a wide range of battlefield conditions.

Australian units employed the 6-pounder in both the North African campaign and later in the Southwest Pacific, where it was often used not only against armour but also against bunkers, strongpoints, and defensive positions. The gun was valued for its reliability, accuracy, and versatility. It became the backbone of Australian anti-tank defences during the middle years of the war, giving infantry formations a much-needed weapon capable of countering enemy armour and supporting offensive operations.
