The USMC Medics in World War II were actually U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsmen, as the United States Marine Corps did not have its own dedicated medical branch. These corpsmen were assigned to Marine units to provide battlefield medical care, often serving directly alongside infantry during combat. Equipped with medical kits, bandages, morphine, and plasma, they treated wounded Marines under fire, stabilised casualties, and organised evacuation to aid stations or field hospitals. Corpsmen were usually marked with Red Cross insignia, but this did not always guarantee safety in the intense fighting of the Pacific.
 
Navy corpsmen served in every major Marine campaign, including Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, where they often had to treat injuries in extreme conditions such as jungle terrain, volcanic rock, or under heavy artillery fire. They were highly respected by Marines, who relied on them for survival during brutal close-range combat. Many corpsmen received decorations for bravery, as their role required them to expose themselves to danger to reach wounded men, making them some of the most valued members of Marine combat units.
