The USMC Rifle Squad in World War II was the basic infantry fighting unit of the U.S. Marine Corps, typically consisting of 12 Marines led by a Sergeant or Corporal. The squad was organised around a balance of firepower and manoeuvre, with most Marines armed with the M1 Garand rifle, supported by a Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) to provide automatic fire. Additional weapons often included Thompson submachine guns, pistols for leaders, and grenades for close combat. This structure gave the squad strong individual firepower and flexibility, allowing it to operate effectively in both offensive and defensive roles.
 
In the Pacific campaigns, Marine rifle squads fought in extremely difficult conditions, including jungle, coral islands, and heavily fortified positions. Squads were trained to work closely with flamethrower teams, engineers, and tanks, especially when attacking bunkers and cave systems used by Japanese defenders. Battles such as Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa showed the importance of small-unit leadership and coordination, with squads often fighting at very close range. The USMC rifle squad’s discipline, firepower, and aggressive tactics made it one of the most effective infantry units of the war.
