The USMC Tank Riders were Marine infantry who rode on top of tanks during assaults in the Pacific War, using the vehicles for protection, mobility, and close support in difficult terrain. This tactic became common from 1943 onward, especially in battles such as Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, where dense jungle, bunkers, and fortified positions made coordinated infantry-tank teamwork essential. Riding on the hull or turret of M4 Sherman tanks, the Marines could quickly dismount when contact was made, allowing them to clear enemy positions while the tank provided covering fire.
 
Tank riders helped protect the tanks from enemy soldiers armed with satchel charges, magnetic mines, or suicide weapons, while also guiding the crew through terrain where visibility from inside the tank was limited. Communication between infantry and tank crews was often done by hand signals or shouting, as radios were not always available. Although dangerous—since riders were exposed to enemy fire and explosions—the tactic proved highly effective in close combat and became a standard method of cooperation between U.S. Marine Corps infantry and armour in the later stages of World War II.
