The USA M3A3 Stuart was the final major production model of the M3 Stuart light tank series, introduced in 1943 with significant design improvements over earlier versions. It featured a lengthened, welded hull with well-sloped armour up to 51mm for better ballistic protection, and a redesigned turret with an improved commander’s cupola for greater visibility. Retaining the 37mm M6 gun and coaxial .30 cal machine gun, the M3A3 was powered by twin Cadillac V8 engines with an automatic transmission, giving it a top speed of 58 km/h (36 mph) and excellent mobility. The increased internal space improved crew comfort and ammunition storage, making it more effective in reconnaissance and support roles. The M3A3 saw extensive service with U.S. and Allied forces in Europe, the Pacific, and under Lend-Lease with nations such as France and China. While still outgunned by heavier enemy tanks, its speed, reliability, and upgraded protection made it one of the most refined and capable Stuart variants of the war.
