The USA M3A1 Stuart (Early War Variant) was a light tank introduced in 1941 as an improved version of the original M3, designed for reconnaissance and infantry support. It featured a fully traversable turret with a 37mm M6 gun, a coaxial .30 cal machine gun, and improved crew ergonomics, including a turret basket for easier operation. Armour thickness ranged up to 44mm, offering decent protection against small arms and light anti-tank weapons, while its Continental W-670 radial engine provided a top speed of 58 km/h (36 mph). The M3A1 saw action in North Africa, the Pacific, and with Allied forces under Lend-Lease, where its speed and reliability were assets, though it quickly became outclassed by heavier enemy tanks as the war progressed.
