USA - M3A1 Stuart - No Sponsons (Late War Variant)
The USA M3A1 Stuart – No Sponsons (Late War Variant) was a modified version of the M3A1 light tank, adapted by removing its hull-mounted sponson machine guns to simplify production, reduce weight, and improve crew space. Retaining the 37mm M6 gun in the fully traversable turret and a coaxial .30 cal machine gun, it had armour up to 44mm and was powered by the Continental W-670 radial engine, reaching speeds of 58 km/h (36 mph). By the late war period, it was mainly employed in reconnaissance, escort, and infantry support roles, as its light armour and armament made it unsuitable for head-on engagements with enemy tanks. Many of these no-sponson M3A1s were supplied to Allied forces via Lend-Lease, where they continued to serve effectively in secondary combat roles and training well after the type was phased out of U.S. front-line service.
