The Soviet ISU-122 was a heavy self-propelled gun developed in 1943, based on the IS tank chassis, and designed to provide long-range anti-tank and assault firepower. It was armed with the powerful 122mm A-19S gun, later upgraded to the 122mm D-25S, capable of destroying German heavy tanks such as the Panther and Tiger I/II at long ranges, while also firing devastating high-explosive shells against fortifications. Armour protection was strong, with a frontal plate up to 120mm thick, making it resistant to most German anti-tank weapons of the time. Powered by the V-2-IS diesel engine, it could reach speeds of around 37 km/h (23 mph), giving it decent mobility for its weight. Entering service in late 1943, the ISU-122 fought in all major Soviet offensives of 1944–45, including the push into Berlin, where it proved highly effective in both anti-tank ambushes and urban assault roles. Over 1,700 units were produced, and it remained in service post-war, cementing its reputation as one of the Red Army’s most versatile and powerful self-propelled guns.
