The M26 Pershing was a heavy tank introduced by the U.S. Army in the final months of World War II. Designed as a response to heavily armored German tanks like the Panther and Tiger, the M26 featured a powerful 90mm M3 gun, capable of penetrating thick armor, and boasted improved frontal armor compared to the M4 Sherman. With a top speed of around 25 mph (40 km/h), it balanced firepower, protection, and mobility effectively for the battlefield. Though its deployment was limited in Europe due to its late arrival in early 1945, the M26 Pershing saw action during the Battle of the Bulge and the push into Germany, proving effective against German armor. The Pershing marked a significant evolution in U.S. tank design, setting the stage for post-war armored vehicles and serving as the foundation for future American main battle tanks.
