The Japanese SMG Squad represented small assault teams equipped with submachine guns, used primarily for close-quarters combat during World War II. While the Imperial Japanese Army did not issue submachine guns as widely as many Allied forces, weapons such as the Type 100 submachine gun were used by selected troops including assault units, paratroopers, and some naval landing forces. A typical SMG squad was organised for aggressive short-range fighting, with several soldiers armed with submachine guns supported by riflemen carrying grenades and sometimes a light machine gun for covering fire.

These squads were particularly suited for jungle warfare, night attacks, and urban fighting, where short engagement ranges made automatic weapons highly effective. Submachine guns allowed rapid bursts of fire during assaults on enemy positions, trench systems, or defensive strongpoints. Although relatively rare compared to rifle-equipped infantry squads, SMG teams provided Japanese units with valuable close-range firepower, especially during the later stages of the Pacific War, where intense fighting often occurred in confined terrain such as forests, caves, and built-up areas.
