The Japanese Lunge Mine was a specialised anti-tank weapon developed during the later stages of World War II, designed for close-range attacks against enemy armoured vehicles. Officially known as the Type 3 Anti-Tank Mine, it consisted of a shaped charge mounted on the end of a wooden pole, with a spike or probe at the front connected to a detonator. To use the weapon, a soldier would charge toward an enemy tank and thrust the pole against the vehicle’s armour, triggering the explosive on impact. The shaped charge could penetrate significant armour if properly placed, making it capable of disabling tanks such as the M4 Sherman.

This weapon was primarily issued during 1944–45, when Japan faced increasing shortages of conventional anti-tank weapons and armoured vehicles. It was intended as a last-resort weapon, reflecting the desperate defensive tactics adopted during battles such as Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. While potentially effective, the weapon was extremely dangerous for the operator and usually resulted in the death of the attacking soldier. The lunge mine became one of the most striking examples of the extreme close-combat anti-tank measures employed by Japanese forces during the final phase of the Pacific War.
