USA - USMC HQ (2)

The USMC HQ Section in World War II formed the command element of a Marine platoon or company, responsible for leadership, communication, and coordination during combat operations. Led by an officer (usually a lieutenant or captain) and supported by senior NCOs, the HQ section included radio operators, runners, signal personnel, and sometimes scouts or messengers, all tasked with maintaining control of the unit in fast-moving and often chaotic battlefield conditions. Equipment commonly included field radios, maps, binoculars, signal flags, and pistols or carbines for personal defence.
 
In the Pacific campaigns, HQ sections often operated close behind the front line due to the confined nature of jungle and island fighting. Commanders needed to stay near their troops to direct assaults, call for artillery or naval gunfire support, and coordinate with tanks, engineers, and supporting units. Because of this, HQ personnel were frequently exposed to enemy fire and could become involved in close combat. The effectiveness of Marine operations in battles such as Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa depended heavily on these small command teams maintaining communication and control under extremely difficult conditions.
