The Stuart flamethrower tank with a hull-mounted flamethrower was a field-modified variant of the M3 or M5 Stuart light tank, used primarily by U.S. Marine Corps units in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In this version, one of the hull-mounted machine guns was replaced with a flamethrower, allowing the tank to project flames forward while still retaining its 37mm turret gun.
These modified Stuarts were used in close-quarters combat to clear bunkers, caves, and entrenched positions during island assaults such as those on Saipan and Iwo Jima. While not as powerful as dedicated flamethrower tanks like the later M4 Sherman variants, the hull-mounted flamethrower Stuarts provided valuable flame support in tight terrain where enemy resistance was fierce and conventional weapons were less effective.
