The Soviet IS-2 Heavy Tank was one of the most powerful tanks of World War II, introduced in 1944 as an upgrade to the earlier IS-1. Armed with the formidable 122mm D-25T gun, it could destroy German Panthers, Tigers, and fortified positions with devastating high-explosive shells, though its low rate of fire (2–3 rounds per minute) was a drawback. Armour protection was heavily improved, with a cast, sloped glacis plate up to 120mm thick, making it highly resistant to most German anti-tank weapons of the time. Powered by the V-2-IS 12-cylinder diesel engine, the IS-2 could reach speeds of 37 km/h (23 mph), balancing heavy armour with reasonable mobility for a tank of its size. It played a crucial role in the Soviet offensives of 1944–45, including the Battle of Berlin, where its gun was as effective against bunkers and urban strongpoints as it was against tanks. Over 3,800 IS-2s were produced, and it remained in service long after the war, influencing post-war Soviet heavy tank designs. The IS-2 became a symbol of Soviet armoured might and one of the most feared tanks of the late war.
