French Square (1815) - Epic Scale

The French Infantry Square of 1815 represents one of the Napoleonic battlefield’s most recognisable defensive formations. When threatened by enemy cavalry, French infantry battalions could form a tightly packed hollow square, with soldiers facing outwards on all four sides and officers, standards and other personnel protected within. Presenting a wall of bayonets supported by disciplined musket volleys, a well-formed square was extremely difficult for cavalry to break, although its dense formation made it vulnerable to artillery and infantry fire. During the Waterloo Campaign of 1815, French troops used squares when facing the powerful Allied cavalry, demonstrating the discipline and coordination required of Napoleonic infantry when confronted by mounted attack.
