The British Rolls-Royce Armoured Car was one of the most iconic armoured vehicles of the early 20th century, originally developed during World War I and still in limited use during World War II. Based on the robust Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost chassis, the vehicle featured a riveted steel body with armour up to 8mm thick and was armed with a single .303 Vickers water-cooled machine gun mounted in a fully rotating turret. Renowned for its reliability, smooth ride, and mechanical durability, it excelled on roads and flat terrain, though it was less effective off-road. During World War II, many surviving vehicles—some upgraded with new chassis and turrets—were used by British and Commonwealth forces in North Africa, the Middle East, and for airfield defence and internal security duties. Though outdated by the standards of the time, its dependable performance and ease of maintenance kept it in service into the early 1940s. The Rolls-Royce Armoured Car remains a symbol of Britain’s early armoured warfare heritage and the adaptability of pre-war designs in later conflicts.
