The British Lanchester 6x4 Armoured Car was an interwar reconnaissance vehicle that saw limited service during the early stages of World War II. Developed in the late 1920s and entering production in 1928, it was based on a Lanchester commercial truck chassis with a 6x4 wheel configuration, offering good road performance but limited off-road mobility. The vehicle featured riveted armour up to 9mm thick, providing protection against small arms fire, and was armed with one or two .303 Vickers machine guns mounted in a fully rotating turret, with an additional hull-mounted gun on some models. Crewed by three, the Lanchester was intended for colonial policing, convoy escort, and reconnaissance in overseas territories, and saw service with the British Army, RAF Armoured Car Companies, and Commonwealth forces. At the outbreak of World War II, many were still in use in Malaya, Hong Kong, and the Middle East, but by 1941 they were largely withdrawn from front-line duties in favour of more modern designs like the Humber and Daimler armoured cars. Though outdated by the war’s start, the Lanchester 6x4 played a role in Britain’s early-war and interwar armoured development.
