The British 56-A C Dorchester Armoured Command Vehicle was a large, well-protected mobile headquarters used by British and Commonwealth forces during World War II to coordinate operations close to the front lines. Built on the AEC Matador 4x4 truck chassis, the Dorchester featured a spacious, fully enclosed armored body with 14mm thick armor to protect against small arms fire and shrapnel. Inside, it was fitted with map tables, radio equipment, and workstations for staff officers, allowing commanders to plan and direct operations while on the move. The 56-A C variant was one of the most common versions, crewed by five and sometimes armed with a Bren light machine gun for self-defense. Renowned for its comfort and practicality compared to other wartime vehicles, the Dorchester served in multiple theaters, including North Africa, Italy, and North-West Europe. It became particularly famous for its use by high-ranking commanders such as Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, whose personal Dorchesters were nicknamed "Old Faithful" and "Old Smokey". Its combination of mobility, communications capability, and protection made it one of the most effective command vehicles of the war.
