The British AEC Armoured Car Mk.I was a well-armored reconnaissance vehicle introduced in 1941, combining the protection and firepower of a light tank with the speed and maneuverability of an armored car. It was equipped with a 2-pounder (40mm) anti-tank gun mounted in a turret similar to that of the early Churchill and Valentine tanks, alongside a 7.92mm BESA machine gun for infantry support and anti-soft target roles. The vehicle was built on a robust truck chassis and powered by a diesel engine, giving it good reliability and a reasonable top speed for reconnaissance missions. Unlike many light armored cars of the time, the AEC offered significantly better armor protection, allowing it to engage enemy vehicles with greater confidence. It saw active service in North Africa, the Italian Campaign, and North-West Europe, where it was used for long-range patrols, escort duties, and mobile fire support. Its combination of durability, firepower, and operational flexibility made it a valued asset for British and Commonwealth forces throughout the later stages of the war.
