The Australian Bofors 40mm AA Gun (AA Pose) was a highly effective light anti-aircraft weapon used by Australian forces throughout World War II. Based on the renowned Swedish Bofors 40mm design, it was widely adopted by Allied armies for its excellent balance of rate of fire, range, and hitting power. Capable of engaging low- to medium-altitude aircraft, the gun fired a 40mm high-explosive shell at a rapid rate, making it particularly effective against dive bombers and ground-attack aircraft. In its AA firing position, the gun was deployed on a stable mounting with its outriggers lowered, allowing full 360° traverse and high elevation for tracking fast-moving targets.

Australian units used the Bofors extensively in both the North African campaign and the Pacific theatre, where it provided vital air defence for troops, supply lines, and key installations. Crewed by a team of 5–7 men, the gun required coordination between layers, loaders, and spotters to maintain accurate fire. In addition to its anti-aircraft role, the Bofors was sometimes used in a ground-support role, firing directly at infantry and light vehicles. Reliable, versatile, and widely respected, the Bofors 40mm became one of the most important air-defence weapons in Australian service during the war.
