The Sherman M4A1 (76mm) was a variant of the U.S. M4 Sherman tank featuring a rounded cast hull and upgraded with the 76mm M1 gun, offering improved armor penetration over the earlier 75mm models. This version was introduced in mid-1944, in response to encounters with heavier German tanks like the Panther.
 
Retaining the reliable radial engine and good mobility of the M4A1 series, the 76mm version also featured a larger turret to accommodate the new gun, and often included a muzzle brake and wet stowage for ammunition to reduce fire risk. It served in Europe from Normandy onward, offering U.S. armored units better anti-tank capability while maintaining the Sherman’s hallmark mechanical dependability and ease of production.
