The Sherman Firefly VC was a British-modified version of the M4A4 Sherman tank, equipped with the powerful QF 17-pounder (76.2mm) anti-tank gun to counter heavy German armor like the Panther and Tiger I. The conversion required a redesigned turret interior to accommodate the long gun and relocated radio equipment to the rear of the turret.
Entering service in 1944, the Firefly quickly became one of the few Allied tanks capable of penetrating German heavy tanks at long range. Though limited in number, each British armored troop often included at least one Firefly, making it a key asset in Normandy and beyond. Its firepower and range made it a feared opponent and a valuable part of British and Commonwealth armored forces.
