The M2A1 Light Tank was an early U.S. armored vehicle developed in the mid-1930s, serving primarily in a training and developmental role before World War II. It featured a single turret mounting a .50 caliber and a .30 caliber machine gun, with improved armor and engine performance over earlier M2 models. The tank had a crew of 4, and its design emphasized mobility over firepower, making it fast but lightly protected.
Though it never saw combat, the M2A1 was important in helping the U.S. Army refine its armored doctrine and vehicle production. Lessons learned from the M2A1 directly influenced the development of the more capable M3 Stuart, which would become the U.S. Army’s standard light tank in the early years of World War II.
