The Italian Semovente M42M da 75/34 was a late-war Italian self-propelled gun developed in 1942–43 as an improved tank destroyer and assault gun based on the M15/42 tank chassis. It mounted the more powerful 75mm L/34 gun, giving it significantly better anti-tank capability than earlier Semovente 75/18 models. The vehicle featured a low-profile, fully enclosed casemate design with armour up to 50mm on the front, offering reasonable protection for its weight while maintaining good mobility. Powered by a Fiat-SPA 15TB petrol engine, it could reach speeds of around 38 km/h, making it suitable for mobile defensive operations.

The M42M da 75/34 entered service shortly before Italy’s armistice in September 1943, meaning only limited numbers were delivered to Italian units. After the armistice, production continued under German control, and surviving vehicles were used by both the Italian Social Republic and the Wehrmacht, where they were designated StuG M42 mit 7.5cm KwK L/34 (i). Though produced in relatively small numbers, the Semovente M42M da 75/34 represented one of Italy’s most effective armoured fighting vehicles of the war, combining improved firepower with a compact and practical design.
