The Super Hellcat was an experimental U.S. tank destroyer prototype developed late in World War II, based on the chassis of the M18 Hellcat but upgraded with a 90mm gun — the same weapon used in the M36 Jackson and M26 Pershing. The goal was to combine the speed and mobility of the Hellcat with greater firepower to counter increasingly heavy German tanks like the Tiger II.
Only a few prototypes were built, and the Super Hellcat never saw combat, as the war ended before it could be fielded. However, it demonstrated the U.S. Army’s interest in creating a high-speed, heavily armed tank destroyer, and influenced postwar armored development.
