The Soviet BAI-M Armoured Car was a modernised version of the earlier BA-I, developed in the mid-1930s to improve mobility, protection, and reliability. Built on a strengthened Ford-Timken 6x4 truck chassis produced under licence in the USSR, the BAI-M featured riveted armour up to 8mm thick, offering protection against small arms fire and shrapnel. It was armed with a 37mm gun mounted in a fully traversable turret, supported by two 7.62mm DT machine guns—one coaxial and one in the hull—giving it respectable firepower for a wheeled vehicle of its time. Powered by a GAZ-AA petrol engine, it could reach speeds of 50–55 km/h (31–34 mph) on roads, but like many interwar armoured cars, its off-road performance was limited despite its 6x4 drive. The BAI-M was produced in relatively small numbers and served primarily in reconnaissance and support roles during the late 1930s. Some saw combat in the Winter War (1939–40) against Finland and in the opening months of the German invasion in 1941, though by then it was outclassed by more modern vehicles. While soon replaced by the BA-6 and BA-10, the BAI-M helped establish the Red Army’s doctrine for heavily armed reconnaissance cars leading into World War II.
