The British Cromwell IV was one of the most common and successful variants of the Cromwell cruiser tank series, serving extensively with British and Commonwealth forces during the later stages of World War II. Introduced in 1944, the Cromwell IV was powered by the Rolls-Royce Meteor V12 engine, giving it exceptional mobility with speeds of up to 64 km/h (40 mph), making it one of the fastest tanks of the war. It was armed with the versatile 75mm ROQF gun, capable of firing both effective high-explosive rounds for infantry support and armour-piercing rounds for engaging enemy tanks, alongside a 7.92mm BESA machine gun. Armour protection ranged up to 76mm on the front, providing reasonable defence while maintaining the mobility expected of a cruiser tank. The Cromwell IV saw action from the Normandy landings through to the end of the war in Europe, excelling in reconnaissance, exploitation, and flanking roles. Its blend of speed, reliability, and balanced firepower made it a favourite among crews and a key component of British armoured divisions.
