The British Humber Light Reconnaissance Car, often nicknamed the “Humberette”, was a small, lightly armoured scout vehicle developed early in World War II for reconnaissance and internal security duties. Introduced in 1940, it was based on a Humber Super Snipe saloon car chassis and fitted with an armoured body offering protection up to 10mm against small arms fire and shrapnel. Armament typically consisted of a .303 Bren light machine gun or a .55 inch Boys anti-tank rifle mounted in an open-topped rotating turret, giving it limited offensive capability. With a crew of three, the Humberette was fast and agile on roads, making it suitable for patrolling, convoy escort, and liaison tasks, though its light armour and limited off-road performance restricted its use in front-line combat. It saw service with British and Commonwealth forces in the early war years, particularly in home defence and in the Middle East, before being replaced by more capable armoured cars as the war progressed. Despite its short operational lifespan, the Humberette played an important role in Britain’s rapid early-war armoured expansion.
