The USMC NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) in World War II played a vital leadership role within Marine infantry units, serving as the backbone of squad and platoon organisation. Ranks such as Corporal and Sergeant were responsible for leading small groups of Marines in combat, maintaining discipline, and ensuring orders from officers were carried out effectively. NCOs were typically experienced soldiers, often veterans of earlier campaigns, and were expected to lead from the front, especially in the close and intense fighting common in the Pacific theatre.

In battle, Marine NCOs directed squad movements, positioned machine guns and riflemen, organised defensive positions, and coordinated attacks against enemy bunkers, trenches, and fortified caves. They were usually armed with M1 Garand rifles, carbines, or Thompson submachine guns, along with grenades and field gear. Due to the high casualty rates in island fighting such as Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, NCOs frequently had to take command when officers were wounded or killed. Their leadership, experience, and ability to keep units functioning under extreme pressure made Marine NCOs some of the most important figures in frontline combat.
