The Soviet BA-10 Armoured Car was a heavy wheeled reconnaissance and support vehicle introduced in 1938, serving as one of the Red Army’s most important armoured cars in the early stages of World War II. Built on a GAZ-AAA 6x4 truck chassis, it was fitted with riveted armour up to 15mm thick and armed with a 45mm 20-K gun mounted in a turret, alongside a 7.62mm DT machine gun, giving it firepower comparable to many light tanks of the time. It could reach speeds of 53 km/h (33 mph) on roads, though its cross-country ability was limited despite auxiliary tracks that could be fitted to the rear wheels for better traction. The BA-10 saw action during the Soviet-Finnish Winter War (1939–40) and in the early years of the German-Soviet War, where its armament was effective against early German tanks but its light armour and mobility quickly became inadequate. By 1942, it was largely phased out of frontline service in favour of more capable vehicles, though some remained in use for reconnaissance and security duties. The BA-10 highlighted both the strengths and limitations of heavy armoured cars in modern mechanised warfare.
