The German Sturmpanzer IV "Brummbär" Early was a heavy assault gun developed to support infantry by destroying fortified positions, bunkers, and urban defenses. Based on the Panzer IV chassis, the early production model—introduced in 1943—was fitted with a massive 150mm StuH 43 L/12 howitzer, capable of delivering powerful high-explosive shells at close range. The early Brummbär featured a boxy superstructure with steep frontal armor up to 100mm, providing strong protection in urban combat, though the vehicle remained relatively slow and heavy. Crewed by five men, it was armed with a coaxial MG34, though early models lacked a machine gun in the hull for anti-infantry defense—a flaw later corrected in mid and late production versions. The Brummbär first saw action during the Battle of Kursk and later in Warsaw and the Italian Campaign, where it proved effective in its intended role but limited in mobility and mechanical reliability. Around 60 early versions were produced before design refinements were implemented. Despite its nickname meaning “Grizzly Bear” (given by Allied troops), the Brummbär was never an official designation but became synonymous with this unique and formidable assault vehicle.
