The German Sd.Kfz. 234/3 “Stummel” (Gerät 94) was a mid-war variant of the Sd.Kfz. 234 heavy armoured car series, introduced in 1944 to provide mobile fire support for reconnaissance units. Built on the fast and reliable 8×8 chassis, the 234/3 mounted a short-barrelled 7.5cm KwK 51 L/24 gun in an open-topped fighting compartment, giving it the same high-explosive punch as early Panzer IVs and StuG IIIs. This made the Stummel ideal for knocking out infantry positions, light vehicles, roadblocks, and ambush threats encountered during scouting operations. Armour thickness ranged from 8–30mm, offering protection from small-arms fire while maintaining excellent mobility and a top speed of around 80 km/h.

Issued to Panzer reconnaissance battalions on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, the Sd.Kfz. 234/3 offered reconnaissance forces much-needed direct firepower, complementing the better-armed but rarer Puma. Its open fighting compartment gave the crew good visibility and fast reaction times, though at the cost of vulnerability to artillery and small-arms fire from above. Produced in limited numbers due to late-war resource shortages, the Stummel nonetheless proved highly effective in its fire-support role and remains one of the most recognisable variants of the 234 series.
