The German King Tiger, also known as the Tiger II, was the most heavily armored and powerfully armed tank deployed by Germany during World War II. Introduced in 1944, it combined the thick, sloped armor of the Panther with the brute strength of the Tiger I, featuring 150mm of frontal hull armor and up to 180mm on the turret, making it nearly impervious to most Allied anti-tank weapons. It was armed with the 88mm KwK 43 L/71 gun, a highly accurate and deadly weapon capable of destroying enemy tanks at extreme ranges. Despite its formidable combat capabilities, the King Tiger suffered from mechanical unreliability, high fuel consumption, and difficulty maneuvering in rough terrain due to its immense weight of over 68 tons. It was powered by a Maybach V12 engine and had a top speed of around 38 km/h (24 mph) on roads. The King Tiger saw action on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, including in battles such as Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the defense of Berlin. Though built in relatively limited numbers—around 489 units—it became a symbol of German armored might and remains one of the most iconic tanks of World War II.
