The British T17E3 Staghound Howitzer, fitted with the M8 Scott turret, was a rare and specialized variant of the American Staghound armored car, designed to provide mobile direct fire support for reconnaissance and armored units. Instead of the standard anti-tank armament, this version was equipped with a 75mm howitzer, mounted in the open-topped turret from the M8 Scott self-propelled gun, making it suitable for infantry support, bunker busting, and engaging soft targets. Retaining the robust and reliable 4x4 Staghound chassis, it offered good mobility and decent armor protection, allowing it to operate effectively alongside faster-moving mechanized forces.
Although only a small number were produced and deployed, the T17E3 saw limited use with British and Commonwealth forces, primarily in Italy and North-West Europe, where its ability to deliver high-explosive firepower in urban or close-quarter environments was highly valued. Its unusual configuration made it a versatile support vehicle, filling a niche role between traditional armored cars and self-propelled artillery.
