The Sd.Kfz. 9/1 was a specialised recovery variant of the Sd.Kfz. 9 "Famo" half-track, the largest and most powerful German half-track used during World War II. It was equipped with a 6-ton capacity crane, mounted behind the driver’s compartment, allowing it to lift and repair damaged vehicles, including tanks, self-propelled guns, and other heavy equipment. With its powerful Maybach HL 108 engine and off-road capability, it could tow even the heaviest vehicles, such as Panthers and Tigers, making it essential for German armoured units. The Sd.Kfz. 9/1 played a vital role in frontline maintenance, towing disabled vehicles, and supporting German armoured divisions. It was widely deployed on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, ensuring the operational readiness of Germany’s mechanised forces and helping recover vehicles under combat conditions.
