The British T17E2 Staghound AA was an anti-aircraft variant of the American-built Staghound armoured car, adopted by British and Commonwealth forces during World War II. Designed to provide mobile air defense for armoured columns and supply convoys, the T17E2 replaced the standard turret with a specialized turret mounting twin .50 caliber M2 Browning heavy machine guns, offering a high rate of fire against low-flying aircraft and lightly armoured ground targets. Based on the robust and reliable Staghound chassis, it retained 4x4 drive, good cross-country mobility, and thick frontal armour for a vehicle in its class.
The T17E2 was mostly deployed in Europe from 1944 onward, particularly in North-West Europe and Italy, where air threats persisted during Allied advances. While its role shifted toward ground support as Allied air superiority increased, the vehicle remained a versatile platform capable of suppressing enemy infantry and soft targets. Its combination of mobility, firepower, and protection made it a valuable asset in British reconnaissance and anti-aircraft units.
