The British M7 Kangaroo APC was an improvised armoured personnel carrier developed in 1944 to transport infantry safely alongside armoured units during assaults. Based on the American M7 Priest self-propelled gun chassis, these conversions were carried out by Canadian forces by removing the 105mm howitzer and creating an open-topped, armoured troop compartment capable of carrying up to 20 soldiers. Armour protection—up to 50mm—shielded troops from small arms fire and shell fragments, allowing them to be delivered directly into contested areas with far greater survivability than soft-skinned trucks. The M7 Kangaroo was used extensively in North-West Europe, particularly during the Normandy Campaign, the Battle of the Scheldt, and the advance into Germany, where it proved invaluable for rapid, armoured infantry deployment. Though unarmed aside from the crews’ personal weapons or a mounted .50 cal M2 Browning machine gun, its protection and mobility greatly improved the effectiveness of combined arms operations. The success of the M7 Kangaroo led to similar conversions of other vehicles, cementing its place as a pioneer in modern armoured personnel carrier concepts.
