The USMC Sniper Teams in World War II were highly trained marksmen used to provide long-range fire, reconnaissance, and counter-sniper support during Marine operations in the Pacific theatre. A typical sniper team consisted of two men — a sniper and a spotter, with the sniper usually armed with a Springfield M1903A4 sniper rifle fitted with a telescopic sight, while the spotter carried a rifle or carbine and helped observe targets, judge distance, and provide security. These teams operated independently or in support of rifle platoons, often moving ahead of the main force to locate enemy positions.
 
Sniper teams were especially effective in battles such as Guadalcanal, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, where jungle, rocky terrain, and fortified cave systems made long-range observation difficult. Marines were trained in camouflage, concealment, and patience, allowing them to engage enemy officers, machine-gun crews, and hidden defenders while remaining undetected. In addition to eliminating targets, sniper teams helped reduce the threat from Japanese snipers, who were also known for skillful concealment. Their ability to operate quietly and accurately made USMC sniper teams an important part of small-unit tactics in the Pacific War.
