The Australian Sniper Team was a specialised reconnaissance and marksman unit employed throughout World War II, particularly in the jungles of New Guinea, Bougainville, and Borneo. Typically consisting of two men—a sniper and a spotter/observer—these teams were tasked with eliminating key enemy personnel, gathering intelligence, and disrupting enemy movements. Australian snipers were commonly armed with the accurate Lee-Enfield No.4(T) sniper rifle or scoped variants of the SMLE, while the spotter assisted with observation, navigation, range estimation, and security.

Operating ahead of the main force or from concealed positions, Australian sniper teams relied on patience, camouflage, and fieldcraft to remain undetected in some of the harshest combat environments of the war. In the dense jungle, where visibility was often limited, snipers targeted officers, machine-gun crews, and observation posts, helping to weaken enemy defences before an attack. Their ability to gather intelligence and strike with precision made them a valuable asset to Australian infantry formations, contributing significantly to the success of jungle operations throughout the Pacific campaign.
