The Ancient Period spans thousands of years of military history, from the rise of the first great civilizations to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476. It was an age of legendary empires including the Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Carthaginians, Macedonians, and Romans, whose armies fought to expand and defend vast territories. Warfare centred on disciplined infantry formations such as the Greek phalanx and Roman legion, supported by cavalry, archers, war elephants, chariots, and powerful siege engines.
