The British Vickers Mk E Type B was the single-turret variant of the influential Vickers 6-Ton tank, developed in the early 1930s as an improvement over the twin-turret Type A. Introduced in 1931, the Type B replaced the dual machine gun armament with a 47mm QF 3-pounder gun and a coaxial .303 Vickers machine gun, giving it the ability to engage both infantry and light armoured vehicles effectively. Armour thickness ranged from 6mm to 13mm, offering protection against small arms fire but little resistance to dedicated anti-tank weapons. Powered by an Armstrong Siddeley petrol engine, it had a top speed of around 35 km/h (22 mph) and good reliability for its era. Although never adopted by the British Army, the Type B proved far more versatile than the Type A and became a major export success, with countries such as Poland, Finland, Soviet Union, and China purchasing or producing it under licence. The Soviet T-26 and Polish 7TP tanks were direct developments of the Type B’s design. Serving in numerous conflicts throughout the 1930s and into World War II, the Vickers Mk E Type B left a lasting legacy as one of the most influential pre-war tank designs worldwide.
