The British Cruiser A10 Mk II, officially designated the Tank, Cruiser, Mk II (A10), was developed in the late 1930s as a heavier-armoured version of the earlier A9 cruiser tank. Intended to provide better protection while still retaining the mobility of a cruiser, the A10 featured armour up to 30mm thick, which was respectable for its time but came at the cost of reduced speed compared to lighter designs. Armed with a 2-pounder (40mm) main gun and a coaxial .303 Vickers machine gun, it was effective against early-war enemy tanks and infantry positions. Some versions also carried an additional hull-mounted machine gun for extra defensive firepower. Powered by an AEC petrol engine, the A10 could reach speeds of around 26 km/h (16 mph), making it slower than other cruisers but still more mobile than infantry tanks. The A10 saw combat in the early stages of World War II, including the Battle of France in 1940 and the North African Campaign, where its armour offered some survivability but its limited speed and armament quickly rendered it obsolete. Nevertheless, it provided valuable service during a critical period of British armoured development.
